4 Foundation blocks

Learning disabilities in children: Emotional well-being and self-esteem are two of the four foundation blocks of the learning pyramid. The other two are attention or impulse control and the learning environment.

Just as the foundation of a building must be strong enough to support the whole structure erected upon it, these four blocks must be strong enough to provide support for further learning to occur.

Please invest a few minutes of your time to watch the learning disabilities in children video below. It spells out what difficulties your child might have. Or if you prefer to read, then feel free to skip the video and go straight to the text below:

Emotions and self-esteem

The blocks of emotions and self-esteem contribute to how a student feels about himself or herself especially in relationship to learning.

It is also associated with the willingness to stick to tasks until they are complete.

If your child has emotional and behavioural difficulties, he or she may have associated learning difficulties. Learning difficulties can lead to failure and a poor self-image.

Unhappiness arises from a sense of failure or inadequacy, from being shown up, or from being hurt.

These can erupt into externalizing behaviour like vandalism, bullying or defiance. And may also lead to withdrawn, anxious and passive or internalizing behaviour. The student may end up being anxious or depressed. This can then affect her attention, motivation and even language processing.

Attention and learning environment

The ability to pay attention is basic to all learning but this ability is closely related to emotional well-being. Other factors like lack of sleep, hunger, studying in a second language, monotonous teaching or illness like middle ear effusion can also affect attention. Problems like ADHD should be rules out.

Teachers can do much to improve the learning environment.  The lessons should be taught in an interesting way, using audiovisuals, more student participation and even peer to peer teaching. Fear and punishment should not be used to increase a child’s obedience. Mutual respect is the key. Unnecessary burden of work can be avoided.

Thus if all the four blocks are stable and firm then a child’s learning ability improves and he can overcome other problems like learning difficulties more easily.
