Children in Dubai commonly face illnesses like coughs, colds, fever, sleep problems, allergies, and asthma. Neurodevelopmental issues are also common. Biomedical treatment can lead to holistic improvement.

Consultations for medical issues like:

Recurrent coughs and colds

Frequent coughs and colds are a common problem in Dubai. These occur more so when a child just enters the nursery. Around 6 bouts a year is expected. The main issue is if antibiotics are needed or not.

Unnecessary use of antibiotics is not good practice. Antibiotics not only kill the ‘good’ bacteria but also may have other side effects. Nonetheless, looking for hidden root cause of infection is crucial and needs to be treated.

Hence careful examination to look for sinusitis, adenoiditis, and middle ear infections is part of a good health check.  Also, recurrent ear infections can cause mild hearing problems that can impact language development and attention.

Fever is the body’s normal response to infection. It is the body’s way of fighting infection. For doctors, it is an indication of an infection in your child. The temperature must be carefully and frequently checked.

Fever at or above 38°C needs to be assessed. If your child is young, especially below two years he or she must be brought in to see a doctor immediately, otherwise waiting for a day or so is acceptable.  Sometimes, especially in summer,  fever is caused by heat stroke.

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to harmless substances like pollen, food or dust. Whilst most people do not react to them, a person with allergies develops symptoms as their immune system sees these innocuous substances as ‘threats’ and produce an inappropriate response.

Allergies may cause a wide range of symptoms like eczema, hives, and rashes; itchy nose sneezing and wheezing; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and rarely anaphylaxis. Allergies can be IGE mediated or non-IGE mediated. The latter can cause behavior problems.

At the clinic, we take a detailed history that helps us narrow down what maybe causing allergies. In conjunction with a thorough medical examination, maintaining food diaries and blood tests the causal factor can be identified.

In childhood asthma, the lungs and airways become easily inflamed when exposed to certain triggers, such as dust, pollen, and even a cold or other respiratory infection. The symptoms interfere with play, sports, school, and sleep. In some children, unmanaged asthma can cause dangerous asthma attacks. Asthma is difficult to diagnose in young children because lung function tests cannot be done. Also, many young children can outgrow asthma-like symptoms by 6 years. Asthma by definition is a recurrent problem and has to be managed and cannot be cured.

  • The assessment must include examining for associated conditions like sinusitis, GERD or acid reflux, rhinitis, conjunctivitis. Lung function can be done by simple techniques like PEFR.
  • The goal of asthma treatment is to keep symptoms under control all of the time.
  • The treatment includes removal of causal factor, maintaining good lung function not just absence of wheeze, few or no asthma flare-ups, no limitation of physical activities and minimal use of rescue inhalers.
  • Medication includes those reducing inflammation in the airways taken continuously and those releasing the constriction of airways used periodically.

Sleep disorders

Sleep problems in children including infants and adolescents are common. Poor sleep quality and/or quantity in children are associated with many problems, including academic, behavioral, developmental and social difficulties and weight issues. They can impact family dynamics and parental or sibling sleep.

Children may suffer from problems falling or staying asleep; physiological problems such as obstructive sleep apnea, abnormal or disruptive behaviors during sleep such as sleepwalking or other parasomnias symptoms that occur near sleep onset such as restless legs syndrome, and daytime symptoms such as excessive sleepiness.

Treatment includes identifying the cause of sleep problems through detailed history and examination. Sleep hygiene can be achieved through behavior modification, treating allergies, referring to ENT specialist to remove large tonsils or adenoids, giving supplements and finally medication.

Feeding difficulties

  • 25% to 35% children below three years have some feeding problems. From difficulty chewing and swallowing, to food refusal,  pickiness and not tolerating textures of food. There maybe neuro-developmental problems, behavior problems, feeding mismanagement or overly worried parents.
  • Assessment will include complete physical examination, feeding history with mealtime observation through standard eating behavior forms. Treatment will be behavior modification,  counseling, and supplements.

Neonatal and premature babies developmental and growth

Neonatal follow-up: The program monitors your baby’s progress through early life and provides expert advice and intervention where appropriate. It is especially important for babies who have had high-risk births or have been born prematurely.

The goal is to support optimal growth, developmental and behavioral outcomes for all children and providing psychosocial support for mothers. Development milestones form an essential part of follow-up care for all babies.

This clinic assesses gross motor, fine motor, social development, language and learning ability at specific ages to determine if the child is developing normally. When a skill is found to be lagging behind age expectations, advice is given or a referral is made to the appropriate agency so that the child receives the support and therapy he/she needs.

Assessments occur at 2,  4, 8, 12 and 20 or 24 months corrected age. Certain children may be followed at 36 months, preschool and school age.

Biomedical assessment to help treat developmental problems

Individualized treatment for autism spectrum disorder and ADHD is based on groundbreaking research that is changing the way developmental delay is perceived by the medical community.  Mounting evidence, for example, is showing that ASD, like other developmental disorders, is biological in nature.

Biomedical treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD takes a functional approach to treatment.

Functional medicine treats the individual by assessing underlying impairments in each person’s cellular system.  Biomedical treatment includes getting a biochemical profile of the child through a thorough medical history, family history, review of systems and laboratory testing.
