Social development in children: Some youngsters have persistent interpersonal difficulties that can be debilitating. It can cause a great deal of distress and can interfere with long term adjustments.

Children with difficulty in peer relationships are more likely to experience a variety of problems later in life such as delinquency and psychiatric problems.

Research has shown that almost 11% of children have no friends and many also have difficulties getting along with parents and teachers.

A program based on NFER-NELSON Social Skills training manual has been made with contributions from other programs like self-esteem and coping skills. The focus of the program is to help the child get in touch with their feelings and cope with them and to improve their self-esteem

Skills in making friends, dealing with bullies, interacting appropriately with others and solving social problems are some goals.

9 sessions of 45 minutes covering the following:

• Identification of Feelings (self and others)
• Social perception: Posture
• Basic skill: Posture
• Relaxation skills

Session II

• Identification of feelings (continued)
• Self esteem
• Basic skills: Facial expression, tone of voice
• Relaxation

Session III

• Integrating basic skills: Conversation and listening skills
• Relaxation skills
•  Identifying unhelpful thoughts

Session IV

• Integrating basic skills: conversation and listening skills
• Friendship skills: Identifying unhelpful thoughts
• Rapid relaxation skills
• Converting to helpful thoughts

• Integrating basic skills: conversation and listening skills
• Friendship skill: Identifying unhelpful thoughts
• Rapid relaxation skills

Session VI

• Introduction to social problem-solving
• Friendship skills: sharing
• Rapid skills: Sharing
• Using helpful thoughts

Session VII

• Integrating social skills (basic skills, social perception, self-instruction, methods and   problem- solving)
• Friendship skills: Asking to join in, giving invitation
• Dealing with conflict situation: saying “NO”
• Using helpful thoughts
• Social detective

Session VIII

• Integrating social skills (basic skills, social perception, self-instruction, methods and problem-solving)
• Dealing with conflict situation: teasing and bullying
• Dealing with conflict situation with peers and siblings: Arguments and disagreements
• Dealing with conflict situation with adults: Arguments and disagreements

Session IX

• Review of skills taught
• Relaxation and basic skills
• Social perception- solving
• Future plan

Session: 45 minutes once a week
